Chapter 4 | Financial Planning
What is GST?
GST stands for Goods and Service Tax. It is a tax you pay every time you buy a physical item (Goods) or pay for an experience/work (Service).
The Core Principle:
"One Nation, One Tax, One Market."
Before 2017, a laptop might have 14% tax in Maharashtra but 5% in Gujarat. Now, thanks to GST, the tax rate on a laptop is exactly the same everywhere in India!
Before GST, billing was a nightmare. A single restaurant bill used to have VAT, Service Tax, Krishi Kalyan Cess, and more. GST subsumed (ate up and replaced) all these confusing taxes.
Excise Duty, Custom Duty, Service Tax, Central Surcharges.
Value Added Tax (VAT), Luxury Tax, Entertainment Tax (movie tickets), Octroi.
Who gets the tax money? The State Government or the Central Government? It depends on where the truck travels!
To ensure a computer instantly knows if you are selling a shoe or a haircut, everything has a unique code.
Physical Good (Tangible)
Harmonized System of Nomenclature
Used worldwide for physical ITEMS.
Service (Intangible)
Service Accounting Code
Used strictly for SERVICES provided.
Any business earning over โน20 Lacs a year must get a GST Number (GSTIN).
Tax is based on necessity. Essentials are free; luxury items are taxed heavily.
